Synopsis:

Meet Louis Krinski, Jr. (Joe Pesci), slumlord - a role he's just inherited from his father, Big Lou Krinski (Vincent Gardenia). The wealthy mogul has given one of his buildings to his son, and Louis is following in his hard-hearted father's footsteps, refusing to make repairs and generally ignoring his tenants. However, Louis' negligence doesn't go unnoticed. Naomi Bensinger (Madolyn Smith-Osborne), a lawyer, has seen the condition of the building, and successfully manages to prosecute the delinquent landlord. If he does not make all necessary repairs within 120 days, he will go to jail. Louis is placed under house arrest and forced to live in the building, in an apartment he had described to potential tenants as a furnished fifth floor charmer with a view. The charmer is dirty, squalid, furnished with torn-up old furniture, has no electricity, and features a sink that keeps violently backing up. And the view is of a window in an adjacent building. Out of place and scorned by the tenants he had previously kept at arm's length, Louis slowly begins to develop a respect for the people who live in his building, and an understanding of the hardships they endure - especially when winter sets in. However, when Louis starts making repairs and improvements, Big Lou - who still owns the building - tries to stop the repairs from being carried out.
